They thought that it could not be done.
Some even said they knew it.
But he dared to attempt what they said could not be done….
…AND HE COULDN’T BLOODY DO IT!

Chapter 18, Page 25

I want to apologize to Michael, Kasey, and also I guess myself, for every time I’ve tasked an artist with drawing a wall full of display screens.  Kasey’s gone above and beyond this time, with all those capital buildings behind the A.I. brain in the jar.

Kentaro: I've been negotiating. As a virtual avatar, of course. Prime ministers and A.I.s don't 'officially' get along.
Jacob: Negotiating? Negotiating what?
Kentaro: Remember my father's plague? It's already pandemic...a retrovirus that will slowly surface and kill almost everyone. I gave every world leader the Chrysalis tank tech. To save the world.

  1. Rahka says:

    Ooooh my.

  2. Xilinoc says:

Well, if he’s been negotiating, he must’ve asked for something in return…maybe some of those snazzy anti-Genocide Men turrets like the one Lola had?

  3. Unmaker says:

Commenter ‘ben’ from last strip got it closest to correct – he predicted that Kentaro would bargain with a plague cure. But instead, Kentaro gave it away.

How do you beat Jacob? Be a better person. Kentaro just joined Ciera (spell?) in learning that lesson.

  4. Dorcus says:

Seems like what he gave is downright hospitable. What did he get?

‘Course, if I were Kentaro I would have devoted a lot of run-time towards writing an autobiography about my life as a human, as an AI, and how much I loved life and living, plus everything I knew/observed about AIs and ideas for continuing AI research. Maybe allow humans to make a truly stable one some day in the distant future.

  5. The Sidhekin says:

He “got” the world leaders to adopt Fumiaki’s technology and methods.

Genocide Project were dealing with a small uprising.

Now they have to deal with every world leader defecting from their line.

    … whoof!

  6. jprime says:

Didn’t Fumiaki get that plague from Jacob, who, himself, got it from his former superiors? Something doesn’t add up here, unless I’ve forgotten something.

  7. CapnCoconuts says:

Welp, can’t be all well and good considering Roger described this day as “the day the world went to hell”.

  8. Pat Scaramuzza says:

jprime, Fumiaki got Jacob’s portable bio-chemistry lab, but Fumiaki used it to design his own custom virus.

I’m not going to say much more yet, because I love seeing all the speculation. 🙂

  9. battlecharge says:

My theory is that the Chrysalis tanks are hard coded to reconstruct any victim of the virus with the empath genes.

Therefore, either you die from the virus or become genetically adverse to violence.

  10. Jordan says:

Interesting, so what can be done with the chrysalis tech?

    1) cure fumiaki’s plague

    2) genetically engineer super soldiers and other deviations safely

    3) potentially make it impossible for the Genocide Project’s plague tech to affect humanity without a serious overhaul.

  11. Unmaker says:

    @The Sidhekin

I think you got it exactly – Kentaro just broke the Genocide Project’s hold on the world. Which was also his father’s goal.

  12. CapnCoconuts says:

So he got governments to accept Fumiaki’s tech… therefore most likely putting nations at odds with the Genocide Project… which have codes for nuclear weapons…

Kentaro hasn’t saved the world, he’s sown the seeds for another world war!

  13. Kasey Quevedo says:

I’m sorry. I don’t have time to read the whole page…..I’m busy drawing more screens! 🙂

  14. JacobDead says:

A new hypothesis just struck me. This isn’t about Kentaro and Jacob both living. This is Kentaro’s suicide plan, he thinks Jacob should die with him.
