Regret, by definition, comes too late.

Chapter 18, Page 22

I’ll have to go back and check, but I think this is the first time anyone other than Joey has tagged Jacob.  He usually dodges attacks, but that’s hard to do when your eyes are tight shut…

↓ Transcript
Jacob: See, I traveled with Girii for almost a year. For a while, I thought that I was under her thumb. But then I realized her empathy works mostly via line of sight...and if I needed to, I could kill her with my eyes closed.
Sally: Uh, Jacob? Girii's mutation also makes her immune to neurotoxin.
Jacob: Oh. Terrific.
Kentaro: Sally! Don't tell him that!
Sally: Screw you, Kentaro!

  1. G says:

    That awkward moment when you realize just how many of your problems you’ve been solving with neurotoxin

  2. Xel Unknown says:

    Well with that statement she gets to live a little longer. That’s the sane option.

  3. Mike says:

    “but that’s hard to do when your eyes are tight shut…”

    So, he’s not a modern-day movie ninja who can hear the sound the air makes when the arm is moving? Bummer.

  4. Aldin says:

    Immune or not, a couple of darts to the eyes would even the odds a little.

  5. The Aussie Bloke says:

    Aldin: He probably can’t aim that precisely with his eyes shut either.

  6. Ming the Merciless says:

    Ahhh, for the experts here…dont the neurotoxins work by disconnecting neurons? How can you prevent that? I sprayed organo-phosphate naled/dibrom in Florida…”They”(entomologists) sure scared the hell out of us…had to be handled wearing space suits…
    Why didn’t we stick with DDT?(which is totally harmless to humans) Oh! Yes, the lawyer lobbies…

  7. Unmaker says:

    @Ming the Merciless
    Neurotoxins work by disrupting chemical reactions that are critical to neural transmission. The exact pathway disrupted depends on the neurotoxin, but a lot of common neurotoxins target acetylcholine reactions, which allow transmission of nerve impulses between neurons. There a number of ways around that sort of problem, e.g. atropine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atropine). So as long as Kentaro knows the mechanism of action of GUS neurotoxin, he could indeed block it.

  8. Pat Scaramuzza says:

    Remember, Girii’s physical strength comes from am an explosive overproduction of neurotransmitters. (I wrote acetylcholine, but a reader suggested atropine would be a better choice.) These chemicals also happen to be antidotes to Sarin-class neurotoxins.

  9. Jay says:

    Huh, Enrique isn’t reacting like someone slugged him in the jaw, like Girii would have. Looks like Kentaro’s “improved” upon the original Dr Fumiaki’s work…

  10. Zarylo says:

    @Ming

    DDT is VERY harmful to the environment.
    Does not degrade.
    And may cause cancer.

    Plenty of reasons to not use it.
