Beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we still are just able to endure, and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us. Every angel is terrifying.

I’m back home! And look, I had a full week to work on a comic page! Yay!

The fighting is done for now, and the chapter is rolling to a close pretty soon, but there’s one or two beats that we need to hit first.

(Although no, Msaka isn’t getting a gun — how would she pull the trigger?)

↓ Transcript
Msaka: Maybe I should have a gun...I can't kill from that far away.
Roger: The planes are pulling up. We must be going the right way.
Jacob: Well, we can't go any further. This is one of those old collapsible quarantine walls. Left over from the plagues.
Msaka: They're using them to cordon off Little China. I'm going to enjoy crushing this secession.
Roger: But we have a train to catch.

  1. Sonja says:

    Welcome back!

There’s blood of Jacob on Caera’s sword (Page 97), isn’t it? I wonder if she will use it somehow…

  2. DaveP. says:

^ I have the feeling that, given what’s been said about Jacob’s genoype so far, if Caera sequences his DNA (or even adits to having a sample) she’s going to become “no longer a factor”.

  3. Remus Shepherd says:

Good catch, Sonja. There should be blood on Caera’s sword. I need to draw it in when I do the shading. It’ll be mentioned at the start of next chapter…in about five pages, if I count correctly.

  4. DaveP. says:

Msaka could indeed use a gun: there have been handguns and longarms modified for use by the disabled in the past, including a revolver rigged for a man with no hands (!); though the easiest way would be to get her a military rifle that’s set up for a winter trigger (i.e. an accessory bar trigger big enough to be used while wearing mittens).

  5. Military or northern hunters’ mittens have an index finger only used to fire a gun…Occam’s razor…easier to modify the Mitt than the Gun(think politics, there…) In Msaka’s case, her claws fit nicely on a trigger.

  6. Skur says:

You’re all missing the obvious here:
    LASER SHOOTING CONTACT LENSES

I don’t see the importance of his blood. You might get his specific DNA but what then? You cannot make a Jacob-antidote, the Chinese probably cannot make clone-soldiers and they pretty much know his abilities.
So…someone bring me up to speed.

  7. Remus Shepherd says:

Jacob’s blood isn’t that important, but the fact that Caera drew some of it is going to be mentioned.

I think what DaveP is getting at is there have been hints that Jacob’s DNA contains a secret of some sort. He wasn’t allowed to sequence it, and once he did there appear to be some anomalies. These secrets are coming to a head soon. 🙂

  8. DaveP. says:

Between Jacob’s Briefcase Full O’ Blues being keyed to his DNA, and the natural dislike of whatever authorty that spawned the Genocide Men in the first place to have someone else reading their notes (and maybe selling the details), I figured that if Caera started bragging about her war trophy someone’d put her down. I wasn’t thinking in terms of specific secrets, just general secretiveness.
    Lethal in either case, though.
